DETECTIVES WIN ACTION. CLAIM AGAINST NEWSPAPER. SUM OF £SO EACH AWARDED. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The sum of £SO each was awarded to each of four Wellington detectives, by Mr Stillwell, S.M., as damages in their libel action against the "New Zealand Sunday News." Plaintiffs were Detective-Sergeant W. Tricklebank, Detectives F. Hayhurst, F. N. Robinson and W. 11. Murray. The article was published on. 19. Inter alia, Mr Stillwell said that the rank of a detective envolyed onerous and exacting duties and a high standard of conduct was expected of him. Engaged mainly in the detection of crime he must rely very materially on ,the co-operation and assistance of the community in 'his inquiries. He becomes well-known by reason of his activities and any unjustifiable attack on his reputation and mode of conduct and ability to discharge his office exposed him to hatred and contempt, gravely imperilled his efficiency and (undermined the man as a police officer.
