ATHLETICS.

BRITISH TEAM AND FIN&S. GOOD PERFORMANCES AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, February 16. The outstanding feature of the amateur athletic meeting at the Domain on Saturday afternoon, when members or the British team and two Finns took part in handicap' events, was the pel" formance of Perasalo in clearing bit. oin. in the high jump handicap, inis created a new Dominion record the previous best being 6it. 4!in. cleateu by Metcalfe (Australia) at the Domain in March last year. Although unplaced in the discus throw, Sippala. did 132 ft. 9-iin. against the winner’s distance ot 138 ft. b 4 in., which included 35ft. handicap. Conceding a handicap of 80ft., -the Finn threw tlie javelin 218tt. 85-111., whereas tho winner did 2201 t. with a handicap of 80ft. There was disappointment at the absence of a contest between Cooper and Craske (England). Cooper was very anxious to attack the three miles Neiv Zealand record, so he started 111 this event in preference to the mile. He won the three miles very easily, but as the mile event followed within an hour, lie did not oppose the Englishman, who ran second in the good time of 4min 31 2-ssec, the winner being on 80yds. . Rampling ran third in Ins iica-t in the 220yds, and in the quarter-mile just failed to concede the winner 25vds. His time of 49 2-ssec was excellent under tlie conditions—-a heavy track and a strong cross wind. Rowell, one of the English team, registered a splendid performance in winning the half-mile handicap from scratch in 2min 0 1-osec, after conceding starts up to 38yds. It was an impressive effort. Murdoch, the remaining member of the visiting combination, disappointed as a sprinter, running unplaced in bis heat in the 100yds handicap, and also unplaced in tlie final of the 220yds. After running second in liis heat in both sprints, Murdoch was well beaten by Elliot, a former New Zealand champion.
