AN EARLY MORNING DOWNPOUR. Most of the. sky Was clouded oyer during the night, and shortly alter daybreak a heavy fall of rain was experienced in Ashburton, the gauge at the Domain registering. 29' points. At Mr W. Strange's farm,, "Riverside, the registration was 49 points. lne fall was of brief duration, and, though practically no sunshine had been seen up till 2'o'clock this afternoon, the clouds were gradually breaking up under an easterly wind. The barometer this morning was standing at 30.09 inches. The thermometer readings, maximum and minimum, for the 24 hours were 65.8 degrees and 48.2 degrees respectively. . TO-DAY'S FORECAST. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: Pressure is high and uniform over and around New Zealand, but rather lower in the Cook Strait region than elsewhere. The forecast for the east coast of the South Tsiand from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: • Light to moderate winds, with northerlies predominating. Weather cloudy to overcast, with showers or misty rain at first at many places, but gradually improving. Seas smooth to moderate. ,
