AUSTRALIANS PLAY NOTTS.

VOCE BOWLS LEG THEORY.

WOODFULL BATS CONFIDENTLY. LONDON, August 11. The absence of Larwood (whose ankle, a doctor lias said, was not well enough for him to play), i-obbed the match between Nottinghamshire and the Australians of much of its interest only 2000 being present at the opening. The wicket looked fairly easy, altbougn the weather was dull and showery. Woodfull won the toss and batted.

Yoce began bowling unadulterated leg theory with six men on the leg side very close in, including* forward short ieg. Butler bowled at the other end. Woodfull handled both bowlers with particular confidence, and runs came fairly freely, but during Voce’s second spell Brown, who was shaping well, fell the first victim.

Then, after lunch, when 5000 spectators were present, two more batsmen went out in successive overs. McCabe skied a ball, which was taken, and Kippax, misjudging a shot, was neatly caught at long leg. Rain stopped play at 2.35 but it was resumed 10 minutes later. Then Darling was caught by Lilley, and Chipperfielcl joined Woodfull and stopped the rot. Woodfull was less happy facing Butler than Voce. Ho was finally brilliantly caught, Harris diving for the ball at short-leg. Woodfull gave an excellent display. He hit five fours. Five wickets for 180. Bromley Barnett and GEmmett had brief innings. Voce was bowling magnificently after tea, Chipperfield was out, failing properly to connect with a hook. Harris, at long leg, judged 'the catch splendidly. . Voce received an ovation which he fully deserved. He was particularly imipressive with the second new ball which, on the drier wicket after tea, swung away from the right liandeis at a great pace causing repeated mistiming on the leg side. He did not, however. overdo the bumpers. Details were:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings. W. M. Woodfull, c Harris b Voce 81 W. A. Brown, c Gunn, b, Voce ... 27 S. J. McCabe, c Harris, b Voce 10 A. F. Taylor, Woodhead. “AN ICY RECEPTION.” LONDON, August 11. The Nottingham correspondent _of the “Evening News” says, “It is difficult to tell whether the crowd applauded Voce’s bowling of his bumpers. Surely never in the history of Trent Bridge has such a display of feeling been known as was indicated by the dreadful silence when the Australians took the field; It was an icy reception. There was not a cheer when the captains tossed to coin.”
