Amid the dust, heat and misery ot the worst drought which has ever afflicted the United States it appeals that drastic changes will have to be made in the grandiose schemes ,of the Administration for the regulation ana assistance of the country’s primary mThe revolutionary Jaw which enacted that cotton-growers'should plough into the ground one-third of then- crops to prevent over-production, and so raise prices, is likely to be dropped. The Government is devoting its attention to the plight of the starving cattle, and is considering a scheme lor buying the beasts on an enormous scale for slaughter and canning. The Government has already bought 1 500,000 head to save them from thirst and starvation, and another 6,000,000 probably will be bought tor extermination or for distribution among the unemployed. In some districts in Kansas and Nebraska, where crop losses have averaged 75 per cent., entire communities are being moved to better areas. Of all the States, Missouri is the hardest hit. In St. Louis County alone the crop losses amount to £600,000. In Missouri 378 people have died from heat. More rivers have shrunk and more streams li£" ; e dried than in any season since records were started in 1859.
