THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION,
NINE-A-SIDE HANDICAP TOURNEY.
Ideal weather conditions favoured the Ashburton Basketball Association & nine-a-side handicap tournament, which was held in the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon. There was some excellent play, and the large attendance of onlookers was treated to some fast, evenly-contested matches-in .which about 350 players took part. _ The Association’s officials had tne arrangements well in hand, and the tournament went through without a hitch. Results were as follow: Senior Grade. First round —St. Andrew’s defeated Tinwald, Lyndhurst defeated St. Stephen’s, High School Old Girls defeated Convent Old Girls, Baring Square defeated Technical Old Girls, High School defeated Methven. Technical a bye Second round—Lyndhurst defeated St. Andrews, 5-4; High School Old Girls defeated Baring Square, o-4; Technical defeated High School G-o. Semi-final—High School Old Girls (plus three) defeated technical (sci), 9-7; Lyndhurst, a bye. Final—High School Old Girls (Misses M. Watt, captain, W. Bowden, M. Bail, L. Gilchrist', M Hyman, b. Bray H. Drummond, D. feegers, and D. Smith) defeated Lyndhurst (scr), 6-5. . Junior Graae. First round—Allenton A defeated Chertsey, Technical B defeated Tinwald. Pendarves defeated Lyndhurst, High School A defeated Technical A, High School B defeated St. Andrew s, Hinds defeated St. Stephen’s A, Rokeby defeated Allenton A, St. Stephen s B defeated Hampstead, Convent Old Girls defeated Methven. . Second round —Technical B defeated Allenton A, 5-3; Hinds defeated Pendarves, 3-2; Bokeby defeated St-. Stephen’s B, 10-7; High School A defeated Convent Old Girls, 6-3; High School B, a bye. Third round.— Rokeby defeated Hinds, 4-1; High School B defeated High School A, 9-S. Semi-final—Rokeby (ser) defeated Technical B (plus three), 7-4: High School, a hve. .' Final—Rokeby (Misses A. Cromie, captain, E. Hennessy. V. Penney, H. Irwin, A. Magson, W. Honeywell, D.
Crazier, M. Brick, and L. Cromie) defeated High School B (plus four), S-6. Extra time had to be played to decide the issue in this grade. Referees were Mrs K. Cowan, Misses R. M. Doak, R. Doak, C. Miller, McTigue, Sutherland, and Messrs R. J. Thompson and H. Hargraves. The medals were presented to the winners by the president (Mr R. J. Thompson) and cheers were given. Afternoon tea was served by a committee of ladies headed by Mesdames It. J. Thompson and J. Thompson and Miss Sutherland.
ASHBURTON REPRESENTATIVE TEAM, < The following have Been selected to represent the' AshbuTfton Basketball Association in the junior grade of the Dominion basketball tournament at Dunedin on August 21: — . Forwards: Colleen Hewson, Marjorie Forsyth, Rene McMillan, Jessie McMillan. Centres: Edna Meredith, May Brosnahan, Muriel Schluter, Ruby Spodding. ' Guards: Thelma. Harper, Thelma Stalker, Ina McLennan and Aileen Wells. Mr S. G. Macfarlane will he the manager of the team and delegate to the Dominion conference of basketball associations, and Miss R. M. Doak will be chaperone to the team.
