POLICE OFFICER REPRIMANDED

'ln the Magistrate's Court to-day, Edward Madden, an engine-driver, aged 37, for stealing a levy book, the property of J. T. Rpbb, a, relief warker, 'was fined £2 and costs. For failing to register under the Unemployment Act he was fined £lO, for making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining benefit, he was fined £5, and for "failing to pay 14 levies he was convicted and discharged.
During the hearing of the latter charges the Magistrate (Mr Lawry) administered a sharp reprimand to the police prosecutor in, the theft case (Sub-Inspector J. Powell) for not putting before the Court particulars made available by the Labour Department officer in the Employment Act cases, the Magistrate saying that tlie police had not stated the man's object in stealing the levy book, though they had the Department's files. The files showed that accused presented Eobb's book to get relief payments.
