STOWAWAY ON FERRY.
LABOURER FINED £5.
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON,- May 31. After an appeal by the police for a deterrent penalty to be imposed on a stowaway in the Lyttelton steamer express, Mr E. Page, S.M., fined him £5, in default one month’s imprisonment, in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court to-day. Accused was Joseph Yiscoe/ a labourer, aged 41, who had stowed away from Lyttelton in the Wahine, arriving in Wellington this morning. • Sub-Inspector Martin said' the -accused had no money in liis possession. He had a substantial list of previous convictions. “It is not the fare the shipping company is worrying about, but I would ask for a deterrent penalty,” he said. Accused stated that he could not fincf work in the South Island, and he had tried to get north, where he belonged.
