LABOUR LEADER’S VIEWS.

(Per Press Association). HAMILTON, May 29. Addressing a large meeting at Hamilton last evening, Mr M. J. Savage, Leader of the Opposition, referred to propaganda in support of trade with the East as a means of expanding the market for New Zealand products. The only means that could be used for the expansion, of trade, he said, either at home or abroad, was to expand the incomes of our citizens. There cou ci be no expansion of trade wnile the people’s buying power remained stationary, or continued to fall. When the various countries gave attention to that aspect of the question, they would be moving toward an expanding Within the British Commonwealth itself any ill-advised action might easily transfer a large part of our present trade with Britain to the East, with disastrous consequences to the British people and ourselves. We could not have a one-way trade. We must buy from, as well as sell to, the East if wei were to trade there at all. So long as the income of our people remained stationary, Eastern trade Could not be made complementary to our British and Dominion trade.
