BODY IN A POND
DEATH OF ELDERLY WOMAN. S ’ _____/ FOUND IN THE DOMAIN TO-DAY. RECENT NERVOUS SUFFERER, • As he was passing through the Ashburton Domain shortly before 7 o’clock this morning, a newspaper runner, Gordon Lithgow, saw a body floating face upwards on the ice-covered pond between the Oval and the •water-wheel. The body was about six yards from the north bank of the pond and- it was fully clothed. The police were at once notified and the body was recovered and taken to the morgue. . Later, the remains were identified as those of Mrs Cecelia j Amanda Hoggarth, jx widow, aged 63 years, who resided at 173 Peter Street East. Her hat and overcoat were found in the Domain shortly afterwards. Mrs Hoggarth had no relatives in the Dominion, but a son and a daughter reside in Melbourne. For some time past she had been a patient at the Ashburton Public Hospital, suffering from the effects of a nervous 'breakdown. She left the Hospital on Monday. She left a note in her home bidding farewell to her friends. An inquest was opened this afternoon before the District Coroner (Mr R. Clark) and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken.
