THE FRENCH CHAMPIONSHIP. PERRY AND HUGHES DEFEATED. PARIS, May 28. The French lawn tennis championship tournament was continued to-day, with the results: — Men’s Singles—Fourth round: G. de Stefani (Italy) defeated A. Merlin (France), 8-8, 6-2, 6-2. Women’s Singles—Third round: Mdlle. Payot (Switzerland) defeated Pasambert, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Men’s Doubles—Third round: B. D. Prenn (Germany) and 11. C. Hopman (Australia) defeated Gulley and Hines, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0; J. B. Crawford (Australia) and V. McGrath (Australia) defeated Metaxa (Austria) and H. R. von Artens (Austria), 6-3, 8-6, 6-4; Austin and C. Hare (England) defeated G. von Crainm i(Gerniany) and Denker, 3-6, 12-10, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4; R. Menzei (Czechoslovakia) and Keclit (Czechoslovakia) defeated F. J. Perry and G. P. Hughes (England), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Mixed Doubles —Third round: Puncec and Mdlle. Couquerque (France) defeated (D. P. Turnbull and Mrs M. Molesworth (Australia), 6-2, 10-8; A. Quist and Miss E. Ryan (United States) defeated Tclozyniski f (Poland) and Jedzrejowski (Poland), 6-3, 6-3. Women’s Doubles —Second round : Misses Noel and Jedzrejowska defeated Misses Betty Nuthall and M. C. Scriven (England), 6-3, 6-4. Miss K. Stammers (England) played at the very top of her form to beat Miss Hartigan (Australia). Crawford and McGrath were not extended in the doubles against the Austrians. There was a hig surprise when Menzei and Kecht entirely outplayed Perry and Hughes (holders of the doubles title) in straight sets.
