WESTERFIELD. The May meeting of the Westerfield branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Bine Club rooms. The president (Mrs W. T. Lill presided. The roll call, “My Pet Aversion,” was answered by members. There was a good collection ot knitted squares for a quilt to be given to Nurse Maude. Mrs H. Millar (Lagrnhor) gave an interesting demonstration on the making of rag and uool mats A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Millar. The competition for sponge roll was won by Mrs G. R- Watson, with Airs R. T. McCann second. Airs Alillar judged the competition. The hostesses were Mesdames G. R. Watson and W. G. AlcCormick and Miss Slieate. lauriston. The second social under the auspices of the Lauriston Social Club was held in the Soldiers’ Alemorial Hall. Competitions were won by Aliss May Hampton and Mrs W. E. Smith, and Air H. Cornwall and Air F. Brown. Alusic was played by Mr Lawler, of Rakaia. Air E. McNeill, Who was master of ceremonies, on behalf of the club, wished the president (Air AV. AV. Goodwin) a pleasant trip to England and a safe return. Mr AV. AV. Goodwin left Lauriston on Alonday for Great Britain. He intends to return to New Zealand before Christmas. - CHERTSEY. Alembers of the Chertsey Presbyterian Church, friends and relatives, attended a service in memory of Mrs Roy Doig. The Rev. A. S. Alorrison (Christchurch) >vas the preacher. Air Morrison spoke of the esteem in which Airs Doig had been held and of her valuable and hospitable nature, which had endeared her to all who knew l her. Mr Morrison also referred to the death of one of the very early settlers in the Pendarves district, Air Henry Sprott. A sacred solo was sung by Airs R. A. Oakley (Rakaia). Aliss M. Redman played the organ. PENDARVES The fortnightly social and dance organised by the committee of the Pendarves Tennis Club was well attended. AVinners of the prizes for the flag 500 were Aliss I. L. Lambie, Mr Erie Hoed (Rokeby), and Air AA 7 . Lynch (Chertsey). For the dance that followed, All’s AA 7 . Cain (Chertsey), Alisses E. and Al. Alalcolm, J. Bruce i(Seafield), and L. Lambie played the music. Alessrs F. AV. Ironside, P. P. Doig and F. D. Ironside were masters of ceremonies. WILLOWBV At the annual presentation of trophies of the AVillowby Tennis Club there w r as a fair attendance of members. In the absence of the president, Aliss A. C. Lloyd (vice-president) presented the trophies and congratulated members on the successful season and the standard of play in the, various tournaments. The following were the successful contestants : —Aliss Kathleen Stoddart 1, Aliss Alargery Lill 2; R. J. Chapman 1, H. B. Day 2. On Saturday afternoon Alessrs AA 7 . P. Spencer, G. AV. Armitage and S. Smith (members of the Canterbury Education Board) inspected the local school property. AVillowby was one of the schools to which an environment certificate had been awarded by the Canterbury Education Board. The AVillowby-Eiffelton AVonicn’s Institute, instead of the usual afternoon meeting, held an open night on Saturday evening, when members’ husbands were welcomed. The president (Airs R. Pearce) .occupied the chair and read the motto for the month: “Deeds are mightier than words; actions mightier than boastings.” Airs Pearce was appointed delegate to the Dominion Conference in AA 7 ellington in July. It was agreed that the secretary (Airs B. T. Clothier) should accompany her.. It was announced that the drama circle would hold the first meeting of the season in the AVillowby School next Saturday, Airs A. S. Hayman, who, with Airs J. Aloffatt, sen., lias charge of the cradle roll, outlined the objects of that department, and Airs Aloffatt. presented spoons to the parents of the fortunate children. In the absence of the demonstrator, Air and Mrs S. H. Lill entertained the company with a playette and elocutionary items. Aliss H. Brown, of Ashburton, delighted the audience by contributing vocal solos. Photography and the best collection of flowers proved most popular competitions, the judges (Airs Abbot and Aliss H. On behalf of the men present Mr S. H. Lill thanked members of the Institute for the entertainment provided. The accompanistes were Airs AV. O. AlaeKay (Christchurch) and Airs S. H. Lill. The hostesses were Alesdames'L. Butterick, S. H. Lin, R. AA 7 ilson and Aliss J. Taylor. Programmes for the year were ready for distribution, the competition for next month being shortbread or a knitted cardigan or pullover.
