OVER 60,000 ON REGISTER
DETAIIJS OF RELIEF WORK.
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The Unemployment Board's return ghows that 36,960 are receiving relief under the No. 5 Scheme, of whom, it is estimated, 12,000 are employed on developmental and •reproductive works calculated to benefit the primary industries. There are 5327. men on the register unplaced or ineligible for unemployment relief for various reasons. Farm workers under Scheme 4a and 4b account for another 9248 men and the building trade, under Scheme No. 10, for 40S1. Land development, mining, afforestation, etc., accounts for 9924, making 23,238 on schemes other than Schemo Np. 5.
FREE ISSUE OF BOOTS. ORDERS FOR MANUFACTURE. AUCKLAND, May 28. The policy initiated by the Unemployment Board last year of issuing free boots for the unemployed throughout New Zealand will be repeated this year, and the placing of orders for manufacture is being arranged. Allowing for the carry-over from last year, about 40,000 pairs will be required. The Auckland' allocation will be about 10,000 pairs. Eligibility for the free issue of boots will be on precisely the same terms as last year. .
PALMERSTON NORTH POSITION.
DISCUSSION BY CABINET, v WELLINGTON, May 28. Cabinet to-day discussed the unemployment position at Palmerston North, but owing to the absence of the Minister of Employment in Auckland no decision was reached. Mr Hamilton is due back in Wellington on Wednesday morning, when a. further meeting of Cabinet will be held.
