CONTROL OF MILK

DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL.

VENDORS SEEK MILK BOARID.

SCHEME TO BE DRAWN UP

Seeking the support of the Ashburton Borough Council for a scheme to set up a.Milk Board to control prices of milk sold in the Borough, a deputation representing the milkmen of Ashburton waited on the Council last evening. The deputation did not have any definite plan to place before members, and it was agreed that such a plan should be drawn up and submitted to the Council for its consideration. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) explained to the Council before the deputation was admitted that it was the aim of the milk vendors to have some form of milk control such as that recently instituted at Auckland. ' The Ashburton Dairy Company had called a of vendors with a view to taking over the whole of the supply for the Borough, guaranteeing to the vendors a- price which would be better than they were receiving now, and yet giving consumers a cheaper supply. The vendors, however, had not accepted the proposal, and now had a new scheme to offer. ......

The deputation comprised Messrs At Adams and J. Frisby. Mr Adams outlined the milkmen's proposal, which was for a milk supply board to be set up, and price for milk, and control all supplies. If tha Council was interested, the milk vendors could draw up a definite scheme to- be gone into. Under control, the distribution would be the same as at present, but the special body set up would control the price. There were 18 or 19 milkmen in Ashburton at the present time. . In reply to questions, Mr Adams said that the scheme aimed at stopping price-cutting, and did not affect delivery in anyi way. Mr A. "L. Jones thought control would lead to an improvement in herds and milk quality generally. Mr E. Buchanan said he would Idee to see a scheme that would prevent the sight of six or seven milk carts in one street at the same time. That must raise the vendors' costs. Mr Adams said they understood that the Ashburton Dairy Company would commence delivery on its own. It was agreed that the vendors should draw up a definite.scheme, and place it before the Council.
