BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. THE STANDARD SURVEY. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), Messrs W. H. Bundle, J. Thompson, F. J. E. Smallbone, E. Buchanan, IS. H. Oil*, W. H. Bobinson, J. T. Pratley, A. L. Jones, H. B. C. McElrea and Dr. J. Connor. The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £569 10s s'd, the principal items being rates £3B 14s sd, rents £207 lis lid, water supply £SO 5s Bd, abattoir fees £lO5 7s 2d, licenses £65 12s.

In reply to the Council's letter regarding the conveyance of prisoners between the Ashburton police station and the Courthouse, Mr J. Connolly, M.P., wrote that he had conveyed the Council's request to the Minister of Justice, who, in reply, had stated that he was making inquiries into the question and would communicate with Mr Connolly later.

The Mayor of Palmerston North wrote thanking the Council for the support it had given the resolutions protesting against the relief workers' sustenance scheme, and stating that with the aid of other local bodies he hoped to be able to bring sufficient pressure to bear on the Prime Minister and the Unemployment Board to improve the conditions now operating among the unemployed. With reference, to the same subject the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, on behalf of the Prime Minister, wrote that the Council's representations had been duly noted for consideration. The Unemployment Board also wrote that it had noted the Council's protest with regard to the sustenance, scheme. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote that the Council's support of the suggestion that the full proceeds of art unions conducted during the winter months should be devoted to the relief of distress, had been placed on record. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote that the Ashburton County Council had agreed to the proposed revision of and extension to the standard survey system to the north-west of the Borough. The work could only be undertaken in conjunction with the work in the Borough. It was hoped that the Borough Council would sanction the work this year. The letter was referred to the special sub-committee set up previously to go into the question. Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator on work carried out by his staff in the past two weeks. , Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which showed a credit balance of £2l 18s. Beceipts sinco the previous meeting had totalled £ls 10s.
