CROSSING SMASHES
TWO OCCUR IN TWO HOURS.
A MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED

Two level crossing smashes, one of them fatal, occurred in less than two hours at Repapapa, near Onehunga, within about .200 yards of each other By a coincidence the. same locomotivo and driver were concerned in both accidents The victim of the fatal smash was Mr Henry Gardner, aged 50, a married man/ of Mount Eden. He was a labourer employed by the Westfield Freezing Company, and was riding his motor-cycle home from work at 4.25 p.m. He was struck at the May's Road crossing by a workmen's train bound from Penrose to Onehunga. Mr Gardner, who is survived by his wife and one son, received grave injuries to the head and body. The other accident occurred at the Church Street crossing at 3 p.m., a light motor van, driven by Mr J. Elder, of Mangere, being struck broadside on by an engine that was shunting. The driver of the van escaped with minor injuries to the face, bruises and shock and went home after receiving medical attention. The van was damaged extensively.
