WARSHIP REPAIRS.

REMOVAL OF TAILSHAFT.

(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, May 28

The problem of removing the thir-teen-ton port tail shaft of the H.M.S. Dunedin at the Calliope Dock is proving very difficult, and it will necessitate the removal of the cruiser to a berth and the floating in of the Auckland Harbour Board's big crane to make the lift which will be necessary. It is now proposed to draw the tail shaft, and, after placing a watertight flange on the hull of the Dunedin to flood the dock. When the cruiser is taken out the floating crane will go in. The shaft will then be hoisted out and eventually placed in tho machine shop ashore.

At present tho staff of Messrs Seagar Bros. Ltd., who have tbe contract for the job, are removing the loose coupling inside the hull. When tho work is completed the floating crane will lift the shaft' back to the dock floor.
