THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. The Ashburton Basketball Association's competitions were continued on Saturday, afternoon, when conditions were good. The grounds were slightly greasy. , .-,; Two rounds of the senior competition were played, the principal match being between Tinwald and Technical Old Girls A, which were both previously unbeaten. Tinwald won by one point. | Most of the junior matches were keenly contested, as were also several in the third grade. Results were as follow: Senior Grade. Doak, L, Sutherland, D. Fitzgerald, .1. and R. McMillan, Messrs S. G. -Macfarlane, Hargraves and R. J. Thompson. Descriptions of the Play. Bright sunshine made the early part of the afternoon pleasant for the large number of onlookers at Saturday's basketball. The grounds, though, were, a trifle greasy and this slowed up the play of late afternoon. Chief interest, of course, was in, the meeting of the two unbeaten senior teams. A terrific struggle at top speed resulted in a win ,by Tinwald by the narrow margin of one point. Most of the junior games were very closely contested and spectators were* treated to some exceptionally fast play, the match between Allenton and i Chertsey being quite as good as a senior game. The result—a draw—was a correct indication of the play. High School Old Girls v. Lyndhurst. —Old Girls fielded only seven players, but they put up a great fight against the greatlv-improved country team. The score was 8-23. Miss E. Meredith controlled the game. _ St. Stephen's -CBlue) v. High School (Gold).—Blue centres and guards were rhdit on form. They combined beautifully, using the whole of their courts to the best advantage and throwing the ball about with speed and precision. To those two bases is due the Bluo superiority over School. All six players deserve special mention, but the Misses Speddmg were outstanding. The Blue throwers failed to take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered them. Their shooting was erratic and their position work was not up to standard, though Misses Mahoney and Wallis showed flashes of brilliancy amongst a good deal of fumbling. School fought pluekily against great odds Misses Macfarlane and Cornish had a tidod deal to do wi + h the failure of their opponents' shooting and in the .

centre Misses Cookson and Andrew made the best of their chances. The goalers were quite overshadowed by. the opposition and did not show to advantage generally, though Miss Wells Hashed into prominence occasionally. Score, 1.9-6. St. Andrew's v. Convent Old Girls.— No report of this game is to hand. The' Greens always had the upper hand and had no difficulty in running out winners by 13 to 7. Miss Tyndall had charge of the game. Tinwald (RedX v.. Technical Old Girls _, A (White). —This was the big match of the afternoon, and enthusiasm was kept at a high pitch right throughout. The match was fast and hard, perhaps rather too hard, aud by some it is described as one of the best games seen on the ground. Interest was so keen that no one had time to take detailed notes as the game progressed'. Misses Meeking and J. McMillan quickly opened White's account', and for a time the Old Girls held the advantage. A nice long shot by Miss Hewson started Red's score. This shooter was the only scorer for Tinwald in the first half. At half-time Old Girls were leading by 6-4. Tinwald opened the second half very determinedly, Miss Wilson, in the centre, making ' several very • smart openings from which' Miss ' Forsyth scored three good goals. Red centres ' outplayed their opponents in this half and their win is due largely to their, 'strong centre play. The stress of play caused White centres to fail in their handling. The guards in both teams were uniformly good and kept the scoring low. v Early im the second half Tinwald led by 8-6. Old Girls set out doggedly to overcome this handicap, but .the stubborn defence of Tinwald allowed them to run out winners; by the narrowest margin. _ Mr S. G. Macfarlane had a busy time with the whistle. The final score" was 9-8. Technical Old Girls B y. Baring - Square (Red). —White was altogether too strong for Red and,' in the first half, they ran up 16 goals to 5. The second half was worse still for Red, for they could only manage to shoot one goal against White's 16. Mr H. Hargrave had an easy task as referee. In the second round, Miss R. McMillan had charge, of the , game in which Convent, Old Girls ran away from Baring Square to the tune of 20 goals to 6. Tlie score Technical Old Girls J 14 to High School's 8 is hardly a fair representation of the play, which was comparatively even. The White victory was due entirely to its excellent shooting. Miss Coldicott put up the splen- , I did record of 7 goals from '9 shots, while Miss Doyle "got two from three attempts, and Miss McMullan five from eight. School's shooters had almost as many opportunities, but they were up against very strong defenders. Mr Macfarlane had a much easier time as referee than in the previous senior match. The score was 14-8. In the firsb half Lyndhurst put up a .. great fight, against Tinwald. Play commenced brightly, but over-eagerness caused a good deal of fumbling on; both sides. Red's skipper, Miss T. Stalker, led her defenders valiantly. v She was always on the ball and her, team mates were there to help her out. In the centre Miss Wilson was -outstanding and Miss Bell was, often ire the picture. The Red shooting was upset by strong defence, but both Miss Hewson and • Miss Forsyth worked neatly together. For Blue, Miss D. Drummond was • the outstanding defender, though Miss r Townshend was to' the fore often, i In the centre Misses Shearer and Brooker had most of the work. Miss J. Miles made many openings as attacker and she finished up with five goals ■from six shots. Miss C. Fleming as centre-back did good work against the keen Tinwald forwards. In the second half, Lyndhurst could not keep up the pace and Tinwald rattled on 16 goals to their 5. When Mr R. J. Thompson blew the final whistle the score stood at 11-26 in favour of Tinwald. ' .-y Miss Rogers had a day out as goaler .. for Technical School against St. Andrew's. She shot no less than 12 goals, though the number of her at- ' tempts was not recorded. Miss Welsh added five more goals to School's total. For St. Andrew's, Miss P. ■ Parish secured four of the eight goals shot. Further details of the play. are, not to hand. Miss J. McMillan controlled.the game. St. Stephen's continued their victorious progress against High Old Girls. They ran up the fine total, of 29 goals, Misses Wallis and Mahqney sharing almost equally in the shooting. For Old Girls, Misses Smith and H. Drummond ringed six shots each. The Blues made better use of the full width of the court and worked the side-hnes to good effect. The final score was 29-13. Miss Tyndall had charge of thei • whistle.
