HIGHWAYS COUNCIL

No. IS MEETING HELD.

ESTIMATES APPROVED.

(Special to the "Guardian.") ' TIMARU, Tins Day

The annual meeting of District Highways Council No. 15 was held in Timaru yesterday. There were present Messrs F. Langbein (chairman), T. B. Garri6k (Levels), H. C. B. Withell (Ashburton), K. Mackenzie (Geral'dine), H. B. S. Johnstone (Waimate) and F. J. Carter (Mackenzie). Mr Langbein was unanimously reelected chairman. The Ashburton County made application to have the Chertsey-'Kyle road (a distance of about 11 miles 60 chains) constituted a main highway. Mr Withell pointed out that the application had been declined by the Highways Board last year, but he was hopeful of haying it granted this year. This road was a boundary one and carried a large volume of traffic. Applications in respect to four other roads were made by the councils concerned. * ■ The chairman remarked that in view of the Board's attitude he could nob say whether any of the applications would be granted. It, was agreed that application bo made for tho declaration of the five roads, and that it be pointed out to the board that, in view of the small number of applications in proportion to the area of the district, priority be given to the claims of no particular road.
