LETTER TO EDITOR.

RESTORING SALARY "CUTS." Sir,—l note by an item in your Local and General news on Wednesday that the Chairman of the'Hospital Board is not going to reply to the questions ir. my letter, which appeared in last Tuesday's "Guardian," because the letter is written over a uoni de plume. He should surely bo consistent and, if memory serves me correctly, ho answered an anonymous correspondent, who wrote to your paper early this I j ear, regarding the Hospital Board giving work to firms outside of Ashburton. If he answers ono anonymous correspondent; surely ho could, if he was not afraid to, answer the questions of another on so vital a matter as salaries and wages, a subject that everyono of your readers is specially interested in. And, if there is a public man the ratepayers expected to lie consistent, it is Mr Gallagher, and we are disappointed that lie has lowered his colours. Two short years ago, with others of the Farmers'-Ratepayers' ticket, he subscribed his name to a manifesto and I would remind him of the following -brief extracts: — "A measure of economy has been practised (at the Hospital Board) recently but it is the opinion of the Conference that the pruning knife can and should be applied further . . . . . . And thus have a Board seized with the urgency of economy joined with efficiency." Is Mr Gallagher's support of the iestoration of the salary "cut" consistent with his opinions published just prior to the last County elections? MAGNUM EST VECTIGAL PARSIMONIA.
