FIFTY YEARS SYNE. v (From the "Guardian," May 25, 1884.) Pedigree Pigs.—Thanks to the enterprise of Mr James Brake, the Ashburton Countyi can now, boast of three purebred White Yorkshire pigs, .of noted pedigree, and froni which this gentleman intends carrying on breeding operations, and as he has already on his farm a number of prize Berkshires he purposes carrying on this branch of breed, industriously. .Mr Brake intends them to be the nucleus of a pure breed of pigs of two distinct kinds in the district, and we feel sure his efforts will be looked forward \ to Avith interest by settlers in the immediate neighbourhood of his stud farm, Mayfield, and. many others throughout Ashburton County. The White "Yorkshires above alluded to were purchased from Mr James Rowe, and. bred by that gentleman from imported stock. The breeder has been a very successful exhibitor at the Christchurch and Leeston Shows, having Avon Avell deserved honours for his efforts. The pigs were delivered at Mayfield in good condition last week. ■ . Severe Frost.— Yesterday morning Avas almost the coldest experienced by the oldest resident of the district. The ground Avas covered, Avith a thick coating of frost, and water was frozen to a considerable depth, the intensity of the cold being felt indoors. %

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," May 25,1909). , Ashburton Catholic Club.—The usual weekly meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Club was held last evening, when Mr T. M. Brophy presided- over a fair attendance of members. A better Avas receiA-ed asking the club's opinion on the proposal to form a Debating Clubs' Union between the various clubs in Ashburton and it was decided to appoint delegates to go into the matter Avith the delegates of other clubs and report, at the next meeting. A debate on the question "Would, the Christchurch-Sumner Canal Benefit Ashburton?" then took place, Mr P. Sullivan leading off for the affirmative and Mr D. McDonald for the negative. A great deal of discussion took place and a vote resulted in favour, of the canal by a small majority. Ashburton Boxing Association.—A meeting of the committee of the Ashburton Boxing Association .was held in the office of the secretary (Mr W. H. Little) last evening with Mr J. V. De Beer in the chair. , A number -of letters Avere read from prospective entrants regarding the competitions to he held. An entry was received from Christchurch for the novice (light) competition and Avas accepted. TAventyone neAV members AA-ere proposed and elected. ~ , v Wakanui Road Pillar-box.— Although the petitioners have, not received any official intimation oh the matter, it is understood that a letter-receivmg r pil-lar-box is to be erected on the Wakanui Road at a point near the Government Registrar'"s offices. When erected the box will be cleared thrice daily.
