JEWELLED IDOL STOLEN.
A STORY FROM INDIA. CALCUTTA, January 4. The theft of the ancient idol of Siva, the Hindu Goddess of Destruction, from the Temple of Avantslii, meai Tirupiir, in (Southern India, had a strange sequel. ' . > The temple, which is an object <A much veneration, and is a famous centre for Hindu pilgrims was entered by thieves last week, and the idol, which is encrusted, with gold, silver and gems, and is worth thousands of pounds, was stolen. The theft caused consternation among the worshippers, and rigorous police/ and private inquiries failed to discover the culprits.
This morning the temple priests were amazed to find the idol replaced, intact, on its pedestal. Two men who are believed! to have been concerned in the theft met sudden and mysterious deaths, which the devout declare to be the vengeance of the goddess. Their fate instilled terror in their accomplices, who returned the image to the temple.
