AN INCREASE.
COMPENSATION TO RELIEF WORKERS. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, October 30. To allow of the payment of slightly higher rates of compensation than the existing law anthoritses to relief workers permanently injured, either totally or partially, it' is probable that legislation will be introduced by the Government this session to amend the Workers' Compensation Act. Under the present law compensation in the event of injury is based on the average weekly earnings of the worker over a period of 12 months immediately preceding the accident. Since unemployed men are on relief work only for two or three days a week, and that for only part of the year, their average weekly earnings oyer 12 months are low and rates of compensation to which they are entitled are low. It is understood that the change contemplated by the Government will be in the direction of establishing a slightly higher minimum rate of compensation than the existing law grants.
