SUCCESS IN ENGLAND.
NEW ZEALAND ARCHITECT DESIGN FOR A TOWN HALL (United Press Association-— Copyright). LONDON, October 12. A young New Zealand architect, Mr Uhren, who worked his passage to England as a stoker in a cargo ship in 1931, has won the competition for the design of the new town hall at Hornsoy costing £200,000. There were 280 competitors. Mr Uhren had previously won a competition for an exhibition hall in Manchester. Mr Uhren lived at Pet-one, and before leaving New Zealand was on the staff of Natusch and Sons, a firm or Wellington architects. While with Messrs Natusch, Mr Uhren sent examples of his work to the School- of Architects, at Auckland, where they were held up as a model to the students at the school. He assisted his firm in 1929 to win the competition for the best design for the lay-out of the foreshore at Petone. He qualified tor the A N.Z.I.A. certificate and proceeded to England in 1931, and was awaiting election as Associate of the RoyaL Institute of British Architects when he.won the competition for the best design for the exhibition hall at Manchester, organised by the promoters o£ the Manchester Building Trades Exhibition. He was successful against 93 competitors in that contest. Mr Uhren's age is 27 vears.
