DAFFODIL DAY

ANNUAL STREET APPEAL. PLUNKET SOCIETY COLLECTIONS PUBLIC'S LIBERAL SUPPORT. The Ashburtou branch of the Plunket Society held its annual Daffodil Day jStreet appeal to-day and the usual stalls were erected in the Arcade. It has been customary to erect the stalls in East Street, but their removal to the Arcade last year was necessitated by the inclement weather. Sellers of flowers canvassed the streets from an early hour and were liberally patronised by the shoppers and business people. A copper trail was laid at the Somerset corner and grew steadily as the day advanced. Those in charge "of the stalls in the Arcade reported before the "Guardian" went to press that brisk business was being done. A very tempting array of articles was displayed on each stall and gave evidence of considerable preparation and work on the part of the members of the branch. The plant stall was particularly well stocked and many sales of seedlings were made during the day. Those in charge reported the financial results to be satisfactory, but no very definite idea of the amount could be obtained before the "Guardian" went to press. Last year a sum of over £lB5 was collected, a considerable increase on the sum raised the previous year.

This annual appeal does much to interest the public in the work of the society, and in addition to the financial result has a very far-reaching effect on the work done by the officers. The conveners of the various stalls are as follow, each being assisted by a band of helpers: Home delicacies, Mrs A. Amos ; cakes, Mrs P. AV. Watt; produce, Mrs D. Heenan; variety, Mrs W. R. Ryburn; plants, Mrs J. H. Grigg; flowers, Mrs C. M. Innes; street sales, Mesdames W. H. Rundle and W. Birnie; jumble, Mrs E. W. Seldon; ice-cream, Girl Guides; copper trail, Misses Z. Bennington and J. Dunlop.

SALE AT METHVEN. Members of the committee of the Methven sub-branch of the Plunket Society, assisted by Misses Olive Watson, Grace Morgan and M. Quinu, held a successful sale of daffodils and spring flowers in Methven on Thursday. Being sale-day there were many visitors to the township and the funds benefited to-the extent of over £4. To-day members of the committee visited Ashbur--ton to assist the Ashburtou branch with its annual daffodil effort.
