CHIEF DEPOSED.
THE BECHUANALAND TROUBLE. SEQUEL TO A FLOGGING. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.). CAPE TOWN, September 14. Chief Tshedi has been deposed and ordered to live outside the reservation at his Majesty's pleasure. The Acting-High Commissioner of Bechuanaland (Admiral R. G. Evans), addressing Tshekedi, said he was a de-cent-living man who admitted flogging Phineas Macintosh, which he had no legal right to do. The natives were ordered to return to their homes to elect an acting-chief and a council. A cablegram published yesterday stated that Macintosh was sentenced at Palapye to banishment from all native territories. He admitted assault- ■ ing a native who hit the native woman with whom Macintosh was living in the native settlement. The Resident Commissioner of Bechuanaland served an order on Tshekedi limiting his movements within the area of the Palapye camp and suspending his chieftainship, pending the result of the inquiry into the Native Court's action awarding lashes in the case of Macintosh.
