TOURNAMENT AT CHICAGO. PLAY BY AUSTRALIANS. (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 13. In the Onwentsia Tennis Club's tourney at Chicago, K. Gledhill (United States) went into a 3-2 lead in the first set of his match against A. Quist (Australia). The latter evened the score, but the American took the next three games, finishing off with a. clean cut placement to Quist's forehand court. hi the second set Gledhill won only the third and fourth games, Quist using a fairly effective change in pace and mixing his top spill drives with undercut strokes which repeatedly caught Gledhill off his balance. In the third set Gledhill tired and Quist quickly ran up a 4-1 advantage, which he increased to 5-3 and finished off the set and match in the ninth, forcing the American to chase from corner to corner for his well directed deep drives. V. McGrath (Australia) took a 3-0 lead in the first set against Parker (United States) who was aggressive but erratic. The latter steadied to win the next three games. McGra.tli's backhand was carrying little power. Parker ran out the set after the game stood at 4-4. After dropping the opening gamo in the second set Parker took full control, baffling the Australian with a steady barrage of fore-hand and back-hand drives and sliced shots, drawing away to a 4-1 lead. He was cheeked momentarily as McGrath won the next game but came right back to run out the set and match. lu the doubles. Crawford and McGrath started impressively, quickly taking a 4-0 lead in the first set against Parker and Shields, who then won five straight games. The Australians managed to regain the advantage, winning two straight games. Then the Americans' broke McGrath's service to even the set and won the next game on Parker's service and clinched the set in the fourteenth game by breaking Crawford's service. In the second set the Australians were able to handle their opponent's smashing play, and long rallies repeatedly ended in American errors. A 6-4 victory evened the match. In the third set Crawford's strokes began working to perfection and the Australians repeated their 6-4 victory. In the fourth set Crawford and McGrath took the offensive, going to the net repeatedly and forcing Parker and Shields to resort to lobbing, which the Australians handled with powerful overhead smashes, taking the final set 6-3.

THE METHVEN CLUB. MEMBERS' ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Methven Tennis Club was held in the A. and P. Association's rooms last evening, the president (Mr J. W. M. Dart) in the chair. The report stated that the membership had decreased somewhat, but the club was in a good financial position. The credit balance at the beginning of the year was £2l 15s 5d and the year closed with a credit of £3G lis sd. This was due to the fact that the committee had decided that the courts were in good order. It would be necessary to have the courts overhauled this year and other small renewals would be necessary. No teams were entered in. the competitions. The outgoing committee recommended the revival of ladder matches and the question of taking part in the County competitions should be considered. The Alford Forest Club sent an invitation to its official opening on September 23.

The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr W. Morgan; president, Mr J. P. Stone; vice-president, Mr M. A. Stone, captain, Mr G. R. Burrows; vice-captain, Mr R. A. Callaghan; grounds superintendent, Mr J. Temple; lion, secretary-treasurer, Mr J. E'. Watson; committee, Mr F. Davison, Misses K. E-eary and M. Dart and Mrs R. A. Callaghan; lion, auditor, Mr R. F. Renai; delegates to Asliburton County Lawß Tennis Sub-Association, Messrs O. A. Cuff (Asliburton) and J. W. M. Dart. It was decided to endorse the committee's recommendation for the abolition of the entrance-fee. It was decided to hold the official opening day on Saturday, October 14. Messrs Dart, Temple and J. F. Stone were* appointed a sub-committee to go into the question of repairs to the courts. With a view to stimulating further interest the chairman said he hoped the club would reinstate the club championships. A motion that the committee bo instructed to hold club championships immediately after the New Year holidays Avas carried. The question of playing matches was left to the incoming committee. A vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing officials and committee. It was decided to invite all local tennis clubs to lie present at the opening. The question of affiliation with the Asliburton. Sports Protection League was left in the hands of the incoming committee.
