NEW PROFESSOR.
CHAIR AT CANTERBURY COLLEGE MODERN LANGUAGES. (Special to the “ Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Professor C. Malthus, , lecturer in modern languages at the University of Tasmania, lias been appointed' to the chair of Modern Languages at Canterbury College in succession to Professor T. G. R. Blunt. Professor Malthus, who is 42 years of age, was edu - cated at the Timaru Boy,?’ High School, where he won a Junior University and .Somes scholarship, gaining first-class passes in all college subjects. He graduated B.A. in 1911 and M.A. in the following year with first-class honours in English and French. He also gained a senior scholarship in English. In 1913 lie was a graduate student at the Christchurch Training College and was nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship by the Students’ Association. Ho taught at Nelson Boys’ College until going on active service, returning wounded in 1917. He was appointed senior French and English master at Timaru Boys’ High School, and with the exception of two years spent in Europe on a travelling scholarship l in French, remained there until lie went to Hobart about 11 years ago,
Airs Malthus, who is also a graduate of Canterbury College, is a daughter of Air W. F. Watters, formerly headmaster of fhe Ashburton High School, and has had a distinguished scholastio career. Airs Alalthus was born in Oamaru and was educated in Ashburton. In 1915 she graduated B.A. at Canterbury College and was awarded a senior scholarship in Latin.- In 1913-14 she gained College Exhibitions in Latin. The next year she gratuated AI.A. with honours in Latin and English. a short time she was on the staff of Nelson Girls’ College and, for two years, was on the staff of the Ashburton High School. In 1918 she was married to Professor Alalthus and has lived in Hobart since 1923. Mr and Airs Alalthus have live children.
