LEVY NOT WANTED.
WOOL RESEARCH PLAN. USE OF MEAT BOARD'S FUNDS (Special to the "Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The use of Meat Board funds to assist wool research in New Zealand was advocated by Mr E. Hay in his presidential address to .the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union last evening. Mr Hay said that when the Federation discussed the levy of 3d a bale for research the North Island was for it and the South against. After the meeting some of the North Island woolgrowers went on with it themselves, but there was now a good deal of opposition to the movement in the North Island. The South Island took the stand that it could not consistently ask for an increase of taxation, however small, and at the same time be working for reduction of costs.
"I feel that the Meat Board's accumulated funds could be partly used for this purpose," said Mr Hay. "These funds ai'e collected from sheepowners. A little enlargement of the board's scope to enable this to be done *!onld be granted it by a slight alteration in the Act. I think Mr H. D. Acland, who has done such excellent work fin the Meat Board and for sheepowners in every way, is of this opinion. Anyhow, we in Canterbury won't stand for further levies of any kind."
