FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 10, 1883.) Advance Methven.—ln addition to the very handsome hotel just finished for Mr Pouse, Mr Patton is now having two large rooms added to his building in the shape of a. large dining-room on the ground floor and a billiards l'oom upstairs. The latter will, when finished, be one of the finest rooms of the kind in Canterbury. On the Alford Forest Road a. livery and bait stables has just been turned out of the contractor's hands, for Mr NeilJ Duff, late of Ashburton Including the coachhouse and harness room, the structure is 50 feet by 30 feet. There are seven stalls and a loft. The building is a very suitable one, and Mr Duff has sufficient confidence in Methven as to justify his enterprise being rewarded. O'n the same section he has just had erected a neat three-roomed cottage. Messrs Page and Hodder were the builders.

The Salvationists, The charge against Captain Burfoot, of the Salvation Army, of having obstructed the roadway at the Oetogan on Sunday last, was heard on Thursday at the Dunedin Police Court. It was shown by the evidence that from 150 to 2QO persons had assembled and knelt down, first on the pathway and then on the road, but it could not be said that in doing so they had actually obstructed the traffic. The Bench inflicted a nominal fine, and consented to. state a case for appeal. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 10, 1908.) Social at lluapuna.—A successful social, promoted by Mrs Payne, was neicl in the Kuapuna Hall on 'Friday evening. Music was provided by Sutherland's band, and Mr J. iratterson acted as M.C. During the evening songs were sung by Messrs D. Sutherland and Dellow. A most enjoyable time was spent, and a, vote of thanks was accorded the promoter. Hockey Teams.—The following will represent the Ashburton Guards in their match with the St. Andrew's and Ashburton Hockev Clubs on Thursday next:—J. Killoh, W. Hopkins, W. Shearer, R. Minnis, Steele, W. Tucker, J. Sage, Anderson, Amos, Meredith and Smith. The following will represent the combined team:—McKenzie, Wilson Meechan, Mitchell, Kennedy, Hickman, F. W. Watt, Millichamp, Patterson, E. Watt, and Fabling. The emergency is Barrett. Golf Match at Temuka.—ln the match Ashburton. v. Temuka, played at the latter's links on Saturday, the result was a, draw: —Bradmdre 0, Denham 1; Adcock 0, Cox 0; W. J»earse 0, Stahle 0; J. Pearse 1, Grummit 0; McLeod 1, Hair 0; Pullerine 0.
