FOREST THINNINGS.
MAKING OF FRUIT CASES. {Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, August 8. An important development in tlie forestry history of the Dominion occurred recently, when the State Forest Service was successful in arranging for the sale of thinnings from the Conical Hills, Dusky, and Fukerau plantations in Otago, stated the Commissioner of State forests (the Hon. E. A. Hansom) to-night. The estimated quantity of timber is 900,000 cubic feet and all thinnings down to 4ft top inside bark were included. Mr Ransom said the purchasers were a firm of local savvmillers, and the price offered was quite satisfactory from the point of view of the State. It is understood that the thinnings will be utilised for the manufacture of fruit cases and other containers. Mr Ransom observed that the problem of the disposal of plantation thinnings was one that confronted foresters in all parts of the world, and it was pleasing to know that a satisfactory solution had been reached here.
