CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. MOUNT BOA SURPRISE WIN. (Special to. the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Canterbury Jockey Club s New Zealand Grand National jSteepleehase meeting opened at Riccarton yesterday under most pleasant conditions. A dull day followed a frosty night, but a soft wind, from the north-west kept tiie atmosphere reasonably warm. Th© attendance exceeded all expectations, and an idea of the rush could be gauged in the early part of the proceedings by the long queues , which formed outside the ticket boxes at the various entrances, and later by the rush at the totalisator windows, which were often insufficient to receive all the money offering. Another estimate of the assemblage could be made from the crowded stand when the big steeplechase was being run. Every available corner of the spacious building was occupied, and hundreds had to be content to view the race from the steps and mound in front. Not for many years has Riccarton known such a crowd on National Day. The totalisator staff was up to its normal .strength, but was found to be quite inadequate, both for selling and paying out, and there is no doubt the day’s turnover suffered to an appreciable extent by the lack of facilities to deal with such unexpected patronage. As it was there was, an increase of no less than £7739 on the amount handled on the corresponding day last year, the total being £34,301 (win £13,352 10s, place £20,948 10s), as compared with £26,562 twelve months ago.
