THE WINTER MEETING. SAPLING STAKES TO WAR BUOY MOUNTAIN DELL WINNER OF BIRTHDAY HANDICAP. Glorious weather conditions were offered for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting, which was held on the Ashburton Racecourse to-day. The club had a most attractive programme for the day, including the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and there was a very large attendance of people. Long before the first race commenced at 11.30 o’clock all the stands were filled and there was a fair sprinkling of patrons on tiie lawns. An hour later there was a larger crowd than usual on the course.

The big event of the day was the star attraction, of course, and apart from local interest, thousands of radio listeners heard a broadcast running description of the race sent out by 3YA Christchurch. When the. horses went out all eyes were turned on them and tlie race aroused great interest. All the performers were in the first flight. The club is to be congratulated on its enterprise in this connection, for it lias drawn the attention of the sporting world to the Sapling Stakes. Excellent conditions ruled on the track and all the events provided tiptop trotting. The club had its arrangements perfected as usual, and patrons, owners, trainers' and drivers were catered for in everv wav. -

The Ashburton Silver Band was in attendance during lie afternoon. Results up to the time the “Guardian” went to press were as follows: —

LONGBEACH HANDICAP, (Harness), of 100 soys; second horse 10 sovs, and third horse 5 sovs from the stake. For unhoppled trotters that can do 3.51 or better. One mile and a-lialf. 6 (10) —Mr W. S. Renegrade was second past the stand, but gave way round the back to Sea Gift and Renova. Coming round to the straight Chiming Wrack was second with Sea Gift third. Hokimai won by three lengths from Chiming Wrack, with Sea Gift third, four lengths back. Harvest Dillon was fourth. Time, 3.36, 3.37, 3.38.

Royal Audo early went to the front and stayed there till the straight was reached. Agile was second past the stand and was‘followed round the hack by Thornworthy, which took second place 'from Agile as the field came to the straight. Tangatu went ahead half-way along and won by a neck from Thorn worthy, which beat Agile for second money by a length. Royal Audo was fourth. Times, 3.27 3-5, 3.27 4-5, 3.28 2-5. ' '

BIRTHDAY HANDICAP, (Harness), of 350 sevs; second horse 50 sevs and third horse 25 sovs from the stake. For horses that can do 4.28 or better. Two miles. 3 (4) —Mr G. J. Barton’s br m Mountain Dell, aged, 12yds (W. J. Tomkinson) 1 5 (o) —Mr W. Johnstone’s bile m First Flight, 6yrs, 12yds (C. S. Donald) 2 2 (2) —Mr G. Stanley’s ch m Silver * de Oro, 4yrs, scr (G. McKendry) ,3 Also started: 6-6 Arethusa scr, 4-3 Sunny Morn scr, 1-1 Sir Guy 12yds, 7-7 Muriel de Oro 24. Silver de' Oro, Arethusa, 'and Sunny Morn led after the start and Sir Guy took charge coming to the straight. At the stand the horsesj following were Arethusa and Silver de Oro, the field being all in a bunch. At the back the order was the same among- the leaders. - Sunny Morn went to second place as the straight was entered. Mountain Dell came up to win by half a length from First Flight, while an equal distance separated Silver de Oro from the second horse. Sunnv Morn was fourth. Times, 4.20 1-5, 4*26 2-5, 4.27 3-5.

NEW ZEALAND SAPLING STAKES, (Harness), of 850 sovs ; first horse 525 , sevs; second horse 175 sovs; third horse 100 sovs and fourth horse 50 sovs. For two-year-olds. Class 3.40. 3 (2) —Mrs E. K. All eyes turned on the big event of the programme and great enthusiasm Avas disnlaved by the croAvd Aviio closely Avatched the preliminaries. The race AA’as a good one and the patrons Avtre AVildly excited .throughout, being on their toes for the finish. The Avinher created a record for the distance, the previous best time being 3.23 1-5. Evie Denver did not get away well

and there was some difficulty about the start of Greenmantle and Tondeleyo. Past the stand the leaders were Village Guy, Guy Junior, War Buoy, Sir Gowan, Morello, Compass and Chancellor. Guy Junior took charge as the field was leaving the straight, and was followed by Village Guy, with War Buoy, Sir Gowan, Vanity Fair, Morello and Chancellor. At the far bend, Guy Junior had a clear lead from village Guy, the next in order being Sir Gowan, War Buoy a Compass, Morello, Vanity Fair, with Chancellor next. Buy junior led Village Guy into the straight, with the others in much the same order as before. War Buoy wei t oil to win by two lengths from Village Guy, with Chancellor half a length hack, third. Morello was fourth, a length away, and then came Guy Junior and Compass, with the rest of the field a long wav hack. The times were: 3.21 3-5, 3.21 4-5, 3.22, all of which broke the record.

After the race the president if the eluh (Mr H. F. Nieoll), in the orosenee of officials in the birdcage, congratulated the winner and cheers were given as Mrs Nieoll .tied the blue ribbon round the neck of the winning horse Cheers were also given for the club.

ACTON HANDICAP, (Harness), of 150 sovs: second horse 25 sovs and third horse 10 sovs from the stake. For horses that can do 3.28 or better. One mile and a-lialf. 7 (11) —Mr A. The first three horses past the stand were King’s Cup, Nelson Chum and Cloudy Range. At the- hack, Nelson Chum was leading froTn King’s Cup and Reporter, well hack, was seen to he going up fast. Nelson Chum and Cloudy Range led into the straight. Worthy King came on in the straight and won by two lengths from Taxpayer, Manoeuvre being two lengths away, third. Jolly wave was fourth. Times, 3.18 2-5, 3.18 4-5, 3.18 2-5.
