AUDACIOUS THEFT.

JEWELLERY WORTH £2OOO. STOLEN FROM TRAIN CARRIAGE. The assistance of Scotland Yard lias heen sought by the London and NoitliEastern Railway Police with a view to solving the mystery surrounding the theft from a York to London express or jewellery valued at £2OOO belonging to Lady Reckitt, wife of Sir Philip Reckitt, of Keldy Castle, Pickering. ' “The missing jewels wore in a small 'case with ivory filling, hearing the initials “H.8.R.” They include a diamond star in red case, a diamond ring set with three stones, an opal pendant, a pair of opal ear-rings, a turquoise pendant, with a diamond on a long platinum chain and a turqoiso rose necklace and ear-rings to match, i Lady Reckitt had been on a visit to her daughter and son-in-law, Captain V. H. and Mrs tjolt, of Rayenside, Kirbymoorside, and joined the express on her way to Little Green, Compton, her Sussex residence. She went into the dining-car for luncheon and on returning to. her compartment shortly before the train reached Doncaster discovered that her jewel casket was missing. She at once informed the attendants and the train was searched, hut without result. At Selby, the first stopping place after leaving York, Lady Reckitt states she remembers .a man who joined the train at York getting out. She was able to describe him, hut so far the police have heen unable to ascertain that anyone answering this description left Selby station. The fact that at the timo the express reached Selby, a Hull train was standing at another platform is not- overlooked by the detectives engaged in the case. The audacious and expeditious way in which the theft was committed suggests the work of an expert in this particular form bf crime.
