INQUIRY ORDERED.
UNPAID NATIVE LAND RATES. (Per Presg Association) AVELLINGTON, April 6. An important development having an ultimate bearing on local body finance is the announcement by Mr Forbes that, in accordance with a statement he made in the House last session, a committee had been set up to inquire into matters relating to the rating of Native lands. This inquiry has been asked for by several local bodies, who were having much difficulty with their finances by reason of the non-payment of Native rates. A committee of three has, therefore, been appointed. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, M.P., is chairman, ancl lias associated with him Chief Judge Air R. N. Jones, of the Native Affairs Department, and Mr' J. H. Ileid, chairman of the Opotiki County Council. It is hoped, states' the Prime Minister, that, as a result of the committee’s investigations and recommendations, these matters of the rating of Native lands and of the .collection of Native rates will be placed on a more satisfactory basis.
