The Pope, in opening the new Vatican picture gallery, severely criticised the “so-called modern art,’’ which merely caricatured profane and sacrea things. Some people defended modern art by saying that it represented a search for something new, whereas it revealed only incapacity or unwillingness to learn.
“We wish such to be excluded from our churches,’’ continued the Pope. “Nothing should distract the Faithful’s attention in the name of mistaken art.’’
