GOLF.

.GENERALS V. ADMIRALS. PRINCE JOINS IN CONTEST. LONDON, June 1. Admirals and generals who are golfers met to-day in their annual deadly contest on Camherley Heath course. The Prince of Wales as m last year's contest, played both as a soldier and a sailor, being an admiral m one round and a general in the other. He showed ocmplete impartiality by winning both his matches handsomely. On the day the admirals won with some ease, and they thus becoame one up in the records of the contest. The generals had several good excuses for their defeat. For instance, one general who was responsible for the loss of a foursome 8 and 7, had

been practising the NJorweigian scythe' exercise, which is inimical to golf. Most important of all, the generals were too old, a census showing their average as 62.9 against the admiral's average of 59.6. It should be added also that in this census the Prince was reckoned only as a general and much reduced the generals' average, while Earl Jellicoe, though he did not actually play, was reckoned with the admirals, and brought their average up. i • Youth will tell. The generals will need to pocket their pride and co-opt a few lusty young brigadiers to leaven the lump. The match was played, with proper ferocity. Once a general and an admiral both putted solemnly and missed. After refusing to say "Halved" they putted again and moyed each ball 3in thereafter holing out in a silence that could be felt. As a general, the Prince beat his admiral, 4 and 2.
