FRUIT AND PRODUCE.

THE ASHBURTON MARKETS.

APPLES IN GOOD SUPPLY. Apples and. pears are still in good supply on the Ashburton fruit market, and the demaridl is a little better, prices showing a firming tendency yesterday. A number of growers, however, are holding their supplies for better prices. Vegetables are still in fair supply, but there is not a. great demand. Prices realised at sales in Ashburton yesterday were: —• Apples —Jonathan os to 7s 6d a case, Delicious os 6d' to 8s a case, cooking 4s to 6s 6d a case. Pears —Winter Nelis lid to 2d a lb, cooking Id a lb. Potatoes, 5s 6d a sack. Onions, Id a lb. Parsnips, 2s 6d a sugar-bag. Carrots, 2s a sugar-bag. 'Cabbages, 4d to 6d each. Wheat (seconds), 13s 6d to 16s a sack.* Hams, Is a lb. Bacon, lOd a lb.

The grain markets are steady, but there is an uncertain feeling about fowl wheat. Onions have again risen in price and are meeting a good demand. The supply of really good onions is falling off. Potatoes are still very weak, and quotations have receded. There are practically no new orders coming in, and the North Island appears to be well stocked. Shipmentes from Tixnaru find Lyttelton are very short when compared with last year. Over 52,000 sacks more had been sent away from the tvro ports by this time last year. The following are quotations for nroduce to be paid to farmers, on trucks, free of commission, sacks extra,' except where otherwise stated: — Wheat—ss 4d to 5s 5d a bushel for Tuscan, 5s 4d to 5s 6d for Hunters, and 5s 4d to 5s 6d for Pearl, for good milling quality. Fowl Wheat—4s 8d to 4s 9d a bushel; second quality, 4s a bushel. Oats—Gartons 2s Id to 2s 5d bushel; Algerian, 2s to 2s 4d.

Chaff —£210 s to £2 15s a ton. _ Potatoes—Whites, 30s to 35s a ton; Dakotas, 30s to 32s a ton. Onions—£6 to £6 10s a ton. Red Glover —4d to 7d a lb. White Clover—6d to 9d a lb.

Ryegrass—Perennial, 2s 6d to 3s, Italian and Western Wolths, 2s to 2s 6d a bushel. Cocksfoot —3d to 4d a lb. Partridge Peas—3s 6d to 4s a bushel.

Linseed—F.a.q. £9 a ton. Bran.—Local, £5 10s a ton; shipping £4 10s a ton; 10s extra foi smaller packings. Pollard—Local £6 5s a ton; shipping £4 10s a ton, 10s extra for smaller packings. DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, June 12. Wheat—Offerings of wheat from the country during the past week have shown signs of falling off. The long spell of dry weather has enabled the farmers to thresh out of stook without interruption, and the bulk of samples are now in the market. There has been no appreciable alteration in market conditions. Values for Tuscan are 5s lOd, f.0.b., sacks extra, while 6s is being paid for Hunters. Good fowl wheat is selling at 4s 9d, sacks extra, ex store. Present indications point to a very heavy sowing out for the coming season. Farmers are*-already taking delivery of seed wheat for autumn sowing, and advantage is being taken of the dry weather to prepare ground for sowing. Oats—The market is lifeless, with practically no business passing. Heavy Gartons are worth 2s 3d, sacks extra, on. trucks, while ordinary A’s are selling at 2s 2d, with B’s fetching 2d a bushel less. . Chaff—The demand for chaff is purely local and sales are confined to small quantities, ex store. It is almost impossible to find buyers for truck loads, and in order to effect sales, ex truck, £4 and £4 12s 6d, sacks extra, have to be accepted. , Potates —Tho quantity 6f table potatoes available for tlie market fap excoeds requirements and the position has been aggravated by the fact that growers have been taking advantage ot favourable weather to push on digging operations. The highest figure lining for choice lines is £3 10s per ton, sacks extra. Seed—The market is usually very quiet at this time of the year, and .the present season is no exception. Values are considerably lower than lias been the case for a number of years.
