VATICAN AND ITALY.

POPE REAFFIRMS POLICY.

THE CATHOLIC ACTIONISTS,

(United Press Association—Copyright)

ROME, June 11. The Pope has issued a note lo the “Osservatore Romano” explaining that his utterances of Alay 31 have been misunderstood, although it must be repeated, “that the Catholic Action Movement will remain and be what it and the Church have made it. it i> under, no other supreme authority but its own.” There are other indications that the Pope is satisfied with Italy’s expressions of regret for the incidents perpetrated by the irreconcilables, arid accepts the undertaking to make good the damage, but refuses, to accept the Italian Government’s reproof for Die political propensities of the Catholic Actionists.

According to a. message from Rome, dated May 31, the Pope said: “The Italian Press is left free to prepare a campaign based, on falsehood, while the mob resorts to violence, often, accompanied by bloodshed, against our unarmed and outnumbered sons and daughters. The present Italian educational system is opposed to Christian reverence and inducive of hatred, iireverence and violence.” On the same day the “Osservatore Romano” published an official announcement that in view of the violent forms of activity against the actions of the Holy See, it had been decided that Italian Inshops would assume the protection and direction of society. This means that the leaders of society must take orders directly from the bishops.
