FIVE CANDIDATES AIENTIONED

DUNEDIN, June 12

The general election in Clutlia promises to he one oi the most interesting in the electorate’s history, says the “Clutlia Leader.” In addition to All F. AVaite, the present member, who will carry the Reform banner, and Air P. McSkimniing; who is announced as the United Party candidate, three others are mentioned as likely to stand. Mr .Joseph Stephens, who polled well at the 1928 election, will probably bear the Labour standard, while Air J. R. Wilson, late chairman of the Clutlia County Council, and Air John Christie are also mentioned as candidates, the former as an Independent, and the latter as an advocate of the old Lib-eral-Labour policy of Seddon’s time.

UNITED PARTY SELECTIONS. MANUKAU AND FRANKLIN. AUCKLAND, June 12. The Auckland provincial executive of the United Party decided last night to recommend the endorsement by the Dominion executive of the candidature for the general election of Air M. -J. Moore (Manukau) and Air C’. I. Harkness (Franklin). Air Aloore is 37 years of age, and since his return from the war lias keen in business in Oiieluinga as a land agent and auctioneer. Ho is a member of the Borough Council. He was an all-round athlete in his younger days, and at one time was amateur champion light-weight boxer of New Zealand and Australia. He gained representative honours at hockey. Mr Harkness is a Waiuku farmer, and lias held office in the distuct branch of the Farmers’ Union. For some years Air Harkness lived in Hoiowlienua, when he served as a menibei of the local County Council, and also as a member of the Wellington Education Board. He is a son of Mr G. Harkness, who was member of I arliameut- for Nelson. Air Harkness unsuccessfully contested the Otaki seat as a Nationalist in 1925.
