COOKS AND STEWARDS.
RESISTANCE TO REDUCTION. WELLINGTON, June 12. The steamer Waimarino is held up because the cooks and stewards refuse to sign fresh articles introducing the 10 per cent, reduction in wages. This is the first resistance made to the cut. . The Waimarino arrived m Wellington last Thursday from Auckland, and the pvovidore departments then signed off. . . , The Katoa, discharging coal from Newcastle, is to sign fresh articles soon. The men have stated they wall not accept the new rates. An application by the union for a new award is to come before the Court on June 19, and an application for exemption from the 10 per cent, cut already has been filed by the union. The secretary of the Cooks and Stewards’ Union, Mr Kennedy, is indisposed, and no other information is available.
AUCKLAND CITY EMPLOYEES. (Special to “ The Guardian”). AUCKLAND, June 12. A decision to reduce all wages by 10 per cent, from to-day was made b3 r the Auckland City Council. The proposal was keenly debated and an amendment, that no married man s wage should lie reduced below £4 a week, was defeated on the casting vote of the Mayor (Mr G. W, Hutchison).
