UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.

ASHBURTON COMMITTEE WORK. The executive of the local Unemployment Committee met yesterday, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr R. Kerr), who presided', Messrs G. Kelly, J. P. Hanratty, A. C. Williams and W. Patterson. It was reported that under the No. 5 scheme 147 men were available for next week, and had been placed as follows: —County Council 99, Borough Council 24, Upper Ashburton Road Board 16, Tinwaid Town Board 4, Hospital Board 4. Fifty of the men had been given four days’ work, 42 three days, and 55 two days’ work. So far work has been provided for all who have applied for it, local bodies supplying the bulk of the relief. Officials handling this work have had a strenuous time since the local committee was formed, as supervision has to fie maintained over gangs of men engaged in distant parts of the Conn tv, where a number of the men had 1 been given work cleaning up plantations and water-races on the main highways. Mr Williams reported that 91 men were waiting to complete 14 days’ registration. - THE MOUNT HUTT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Mount Hutt Unemployment Committee was held in the Road Board’s office yesterday afternoon, Mr F. W. Ruddenklau presiding. Various schemes under the Unemployment Act were discussed, and it was decided to make several improvements in the Mothyen township streets and to do other general work. So far few registrations under the Act have been made, but it is anticipated that with the harvest now approaching completion a number of local men will shortly be out of permanent employment. All registrations must lie made with the local postmaster in the- first instance. v
