RUGBY UNION.

THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met on Saturday evening, Ate S. H. Sullivan (president) presiding. Mr H. Sarney reported on details of arrangements for the entertainment of the ’Varsity players while they are in Ashburton at the beginning of next week. In reply to the committee’s ( complaint regarding the playing in Christchurch teams of two players working at Rakaia (Olliver and Kirkland), the Canterbury Union wrote that these players were Government servants, only working at Rakaia, hut domiciled in Christchurch. All- R. D. Johnston said the matter should be sent to the New 'Zealand Union for a ruling, and moved to this effect.

Air H. J. Chapman . seconded this. Air R. H. Loy said it appeared that the Canterbury Union had taken the Ashburton Union’s letter as a joke. Mr J. C. C. AlcLachlan said it was no good taking up a dog’in the manger attitude about it. These men were domiciled in Christchurch and should be eligible to play there. The Canterbury Union had treated the Ashburton Union very well hitherto. Air R. H. Biggar agreed with Mr AlcLachlan.

The president asked if it was worth while carrying out the suggestion to take the matter further. Air I>. Heenan said there was a principle at stake. He considered the Canterbury Union had “put in the dirt” on a previous occasion regarding the status of another player (Carleton). The president said that matter was not for the Canterbury Union hut for a Sub-Union. / The motion was lost.

The usual grant toward the purchase of a football was made to the Bushside School.

Air C. H. Day (referee) reported that he had ordered off J. Cox (Allenton) in the Allenton v. Hampstead third grade match that day for harassing s]jeech toward the referee. After some discussion, it was decided to consider the matter at the next meeting, when the offending player will be asked to attend.

With regard to a breach of the rules regarding the weight of two players ol the Tinwald third grade team, it was decided, after a long discussion, to inform the Club that the two players would he unable to play for the remainder of the season hut that owing to a slight irregularity the two halfpoints won by the team should remain to the credit of the Club.

Air J. Smith reported on arrangements made for the billeting of ’Y arsity players during tlieir stay in Ashburton, and the committee recorded its appreciation of what Air Smith had done.
