SENSATIONAL ESCAPES

AUSTRALIAN HOTEL FIRE. THREE INMATES INJURED. (United Press Association —Copyright.) SYDNEY, June 1. Sensational scenes were witnessed when the large Coolangatta Hotel, on the Queensland border, was destroyed by fire, also two adjoining cottages, early in the morning. Hotel guests, mainly women and girls, almost overcome with smoke, scrambled over the balcony, down the drainpipes, and sought refuge on tanks, where they screamed for help. A howling gale was blowing, and the flames were everywhere making the whole building an inferno. All the inmates reached safety. Three were injured when they leapt to the ground, 24 feet. The total damage is estimated at £15,000.

Coolangatta is on the border of New South Wales and Queensland. In fact the boundary fence divides the town, the New South Wales side being known as Tweed Head:. The licensing law on the New South Wales side of the fence compels the hotels to close at 6 p.m., but on the Queensland side they do not close until 8 p.m.
