CLASH IN INDIA. SEVEN KILLED, NINE WOUNDED. ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING SEQUEL. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) DELHI, June 1. XVliile a lance-corporal on duty at Peshawar Gate was cleaning his rifle it accidentally exploded, killing two children who were passing by and severely wounding their mother. The Chief Commissioner promptly placarded the city, explaining the occurrence, expressing profound regret, and offering any reparation in iiis power. The affair caused much excitement. Large crowds gathered, and had to he dispersed by the police and military. The crowd attempted to snatch tlie" rifles from the hands of one of the military patrol, who fired in selfdefence. , , , An official estimate of tlie casualties show seven killed’ and nine wounded.
MORE DRASTIC MEASURES. TXYO NEXV ORDINANCES. DELHI, May 31. The Government of India has inaugurated more drastic remedies to meet the political situation in the country by the promulgation by Lord Irwin of two new ordinances. J hey are designed to protect shopkeepers from picketing, to stop the movement for non-payment of taxes, and to deal with attempts to tamper with the loyalty of soldiers, police and Government servants. These measures have been Jong contemplated., but have been delayed in order to give Congressmen an opportunity to cease their activities Ihe ordinances will apply immediately to the Bombay Presidency, but may he extended to any part of the country as needed. It is likely that if these measuies are not successful the Government will declare Congress to be an unlawful body.
