NEWSPAPER MERGER

THE “DAILY CHRONICLE.” PURCHASED BY “DAILY NEWS.’ LONDON LIBERAL JOURNAL. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.)' LONDON, June 1. The “News of the World” learns that negotiations have been completed for the purchase of the “Daily Chronicle” by the “Daily News.” DRAMATIC SUDDENNESS. MOVE TO COUNTER LABOUR. (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 1. The disappearance of the “Daily Chronicle” leaves the “Daily News” the only Liberal London morning .newspaper. • n i The cessation was dramatically sudden, the staff being unaware of it as late as Saturday, while the usual preparations were going on for the production of Monday’s paper. It is pointed out that the negotiations were completed only 48 hours ago. The remarkable success of the new “Daily Herald” is believed to have been largely responsible for Liberalism combining tlie two papers.

The “Daily Chronicle” was established in 1885. Since the time of the editorship of Mr Whelan Boyle, when it showed its independence in the support of Air W. E. Gladstone’s Home Rule policy and became a Liberal paper, it has been a strong and consistent advocate of Liberal traditions. During the South African ar, the “Daily Chronicle” was edited by Air W. H. Massingham, who championed the Boer cause in the interests of peace. This led to his retirement from the editorship in favour of Air XV. J. Fisher. The “Chronicle” has always been among the foremost in all public movements, among its achievement being the investigation through Air (now Sir) Philip Gibb, of the alleged discovery by Dr. Cook of tlie North Poie, and, later, the fitting out of the Fram for the Norwegian explorer Aniundsen’s expedition to the South Pole. Other successes include the exposure in 1898 of one “Grein,” who posed as a veracious de Alandeville under the name of Louis de Ilougemont, and the first publication of the late Dr. Nansen’s account of his first- Arctic expedition in 1897. Consistently with its support of tlie Armenians and Cretans in their strug-o-les against the oppressions of the Turks in the Graeco-Turlnsh XX ar of 1897, the “Daily Chronicle” from the first- strongly chamDioned the cause of the Balkan allies in the war with Turkey which broke out in tlie autumn of 1912. In the matter of its news, the “Chronicle,” during the two campaigns mentioned, upheld its best traditions by the brilliant dispatches of its war correspondent, Air Martin Donohoe, and in a lesser degree, Aliss Edith Durham.
