TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

Ladies' Hockey Club.—A meeting of ladies was held last evening in Mr Stock's office. Those present resolved to form a Ladies' Hockey Club in Ashburton. A provisional committee, and a pro tern secretary were appointed. A meeting to appoint and pass rules will be held in Glenie's waiting room on Tuesday next.

Borough Council Nominations.— Messrs G. W. Andrews, Armer Orr, and A. J. Tyrrell-Baxter have been nominated as candidates for the positions of councillors at the forthcoming Borough Elections.

Asliburton County Brass Band.—The annual meeting of the Asliburton Brass band was held in the Band room last evening. Mr J. Snodgrass presided. Ihe election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows .—Patron Mr T. Bullock; president, Mr John Snodgrass • vice-presidents, officers commanding the local volunteer corps and Messrs D. United Band of Hope.—The monthly meeting of the. United Band of Hope took place at the Oddfellows' Hall Jast evening. An address was given by Mr A. V. G. Chandler and l items "were given as follow:—Recitations. Misses M. Hughes, F. Chalmers, Trimber and E. Bundy and Master Jock Simpson; songs byi Miss Rattray and Mr G. Carson; pianoforte solo bv Miss Campion; duet by Messrs Dallev and Thomas. Maylield Presbyterian Church Anniversary.—The anniversary services ia connection with the Mavfield Presbyterian Church were held on Sunday morning, the preacher being the Rev. Mr Jackson. The anniversary tea meeting was held on Thursday evening last, when musical items were rendered by choir and friends. Addresses were given, by Revs Paterson (Flemington), Chandler (Ashburton) and Jackson (Southbridge).
