EMPLOYMENT OF BOY. A BUTCHER FINED. (Special to the “Guardian.”) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 11. A staunch Labour Party supporter, YV. G. Simpson, a Hawera butcher, who contested the Taranaki electorate last election, was proceeded against in the Hawera Court yesterday for failure to notify the secretary of the Butchers’ Union that Simpson employed a nonunionist, a boy, aged 14. Defendant was president of the Alaster Butchers’ Association. A fine of 10s on two charges followed a plea of guilty. The breaches were that defendant employed a boy and failed to notify the secretary of the union of the starting and finishing times as prescribed by the Act. and 1 that he employed a non-unionist without notifying the secretary of the union. Air P. O’Dea represented defendant, He stated that the employer overlooked the point of notifying the secretary 5f the union that the boy was a nonunionist. He could assure the Court that defendant would be the last man to do such a thing knowingly, as he had been a Labour candidate at the last election. “It is a trivial matter,” concluded Air O’Dea, “and no one wishes to uphold the principles of the union more than the defendant.” The Magistrate: If he wishes to uphold the principles of the union he should pay for it. This is a clause that does not get into the award without the consent of the principals.
