(From Our Own Correspondents). RAKAIA. A unique entertainment was held in. the Town Hall on Thursday night, in aid of Rakaia’s quota for the dental clinic which is to be commenced shortly at Rakaia. The Rev. A- S. Morrison, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and introduced Mr P. L. Davies, who entertained the audience. The following programme was given: — “The Miner’s Revenge” and “Across 'the Bridge,” Mr Davies; humorous item, “Oh Memory,” Mr Davies; Pass Every Man” and “Songs Mv Mother Taught me,” Mrs Bryant; ‘ Land of Long Ago,” Mr A. Oakley; A Se a ‘ side Soliloquy” and “The Bald Headed Man,” Mr Davies; The Gospel Tram and “Waterboy,” Mrs Bryant Dealest and Best of All,” Mr A. Oakley; recitation, “Levinsky at the ending,” Mr Davies. The accompanist was Mrs C. W. Browne. Much amusement was caused with a “facial competition, the winner being Master Cornelius. Mi Davies thanked the. audience tor turning out in such numbers, and Mr 31. p. Cooke thanked' the performers. The weather during the past tew days has been very changeable After a ‘dull and drizzly Sunday, Monday cleared up beautifully, the weathei changing again early on. Tuesday, when misty rain fell most of the day, continuing throughout M ednesday. 11 cleared up on Thursday and was bright, and sunny with efrery indication of a frosty night, but haoke du ing the night. Songs ueu, sung by Mrs,W. Thomas, Miss Jamieson g and Mr R. H. Mayfield, an instrumental quartette by Mrs McDona^, Miss Watt, Mrs Mayfield and Mi Wood, and orchestral items by Mesdames McDonald and Mayfield (viohn,> Mr McDonald (cornet), Mr. Wood (’cello) and Miss Watt (piano). Mi Wood was accompanist. An adless was given by the Rev. H. All- J. A. Fleming proa vote of thanks to the Ashburton party, and Mr H. C. Barton moposed a vote of thanks to the ladies who provided the tea. The rain will do a great deal of good to the whole district, as it is urgently needed. Late crops of lumps will greatly benefit, but early crops are past recovery. HINDS. r The Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, Guild and Girls Auxiliary met in the church on Wednesday afteinoon. There was a very good attendance of members The treasurer of the Guild reported the raising of over £/0 by direct giving since the inception of 'first practice of the Hockey Club on Thursday was well attended, apd the enthusiasm shown gives promise of a successful season.
