LOOKING BACK.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” April 11, 1905.) Property Sales. —Mr R. Y. Ferguson reports the following sales: —On account of Airs H. Taggart, Gapes Valley, 175-acre farm, to Mr AV. J. Campbell, Alethven; on account of Air W. J. Campbell, 213 acres at Winslow, to Mr S. Scott, Alleuton; on account of Air J. Bryan, Lowcliffe, 387 acres, to Air 1. Angland, Geraldine. Hakatere Club. —A meeting of the committee of the Hakatere Club was held last evening. Present: Messrs G. Thomas (chairman), C. Brady, G. Makeig, A. Walsh, F. Makeig, A. Trezise, and H. AlcElrea (secretary). It was decided to issue challenges to kindred clubs for euchre matches during the winter months. It was also decided to purchase a billiard table. Borough Council.—The usual fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held last evening. Present : His Worship the Alayor (Air H. Davis), and Councillors C. Reid, H. A. Alackay, J. Davison, D. Thomas, H. Friedlander, A- Crum, R. Clark and J. AV. Timmins. A discussion took place on the estimates for the year. Cr. Timmins was strongly of opinion, that a Is 6d rate was not high enough. The Borough was not progressing as fast as other boroughs of its size, as so little money was spent in improvements. It was finally decided that a Is 9d rate be recommended.
Valedictory.—At the conclusion of the Borough Council meeting last evening, which will probably be the last meeting of the old Council, Cr. Friedlander stated that he did hot intend to stand for re-election. He said he was the senior councillor present, and thought he deserved a rest. Cr. Thomas said that, as second: senior councillor, he did not intend to stand for re-election. Cr. Crum adyised that he would not be a candidate, while Cr. Clark intimated that it would be improbable that he would stand.
